SOUTHERN BACKROADS & ADVENTURE

5 DAYS - 4 NIGHTS

An active way to spend time in the charming cities and surrounding countyside of Kampot & Kep. Walking, cycling, snorkelling and stand up paddleboarding are all part of exploring Southern Cambodia whilst you visit pepper farms, the river and unspoilt villages. And there is also enough time to enjoy some of the best food in Cambodia and relax on Rabbit Island.

Day 1: ARRIVAL PHNOM PENH - KEP
1: ARRIVAL PHNOM PENH - KEP

Transfer from Phnom Penh to Kampot with your English speaking Tour Guide who will accompany you for the duration of your visit.

A little distance outside Kep visit a cave which contains a natural amphitheatre and also contains an interesting reclining Buddhist statue.

Continue on to Kep and head first for a seafood lunch at one of the popular fishing shack restaurants along the seafront. Kep used to be a thriving seaside town in the 1960’s and was designed for the rich Khmer with huge colonial villas, mansions and royal residences.  During the civil war the town fell apart and suffered huge demand under the Khmer Rouge. Today the town is revitalized as tourists once more visit Kep-sur-Mer as the French called it.

After lunch visit famous Kep Crab Market. The afternoon is free to relax a little.

At sunset time we invite you to a cocktail at one of the best places for a sundowner.

Day 2: KEP

Drive to the pier to catch a private local boat across to Koh Tonsai or Rabbit Island as it is also known. On arrival at Rabbit Island you can choose to walk around the perimeter (about 2 hrs walk) or just sit, relax and enjoy the beach and warm waters. Snorkeling gear is at your disposal if required.

A seafood BBQ lunch will be served at a beach restaurant and after there is some further time to relax.

In the late afternoon your guide will take you to the Kep National Park for a walk and panoramic view over the Cambodian coast and further into neighbouring Vietnam.

Day 3: KEP - KAMPOT

A scenic journey awaits today for the drive to Kampot. Set off and drive to a pepper farm. Now it is time to learn about the famous Kampot pepper. On arrival take a tour of the pepper plantation and learn about the difference between the green, black, white and red peppercorns. Later take a water-buffalo pulling cart around the countryside with a stop at the Secret Lake. Then it will time for a tasty lunch at the farm restaurant.

After lunch continue to the charming town of Kampot is home to some of the best examples of French colonial architecture to be found in Cambodia today though many of the buildings are in need of repair.

After checking into your hotel take a relaxing walk around the town and the riverside and enjoy the laid back, friendly atmosphere. Enjoy the backdrop of the river and the Bokor Mountain dominating in the distance.

Day 4: KAMPOT

This morning explore the hidden parts of Kampot by bicycle. Guided by knowledgeable student guides, cycle amongst the rice paddies and see rice noodles and rice cakes being made. You can try your hand at making the noodles if you like.

Return to your hotel to take a break. This afternoon it is time for a massage with a difference – a ‘seeing hands’ massage at the hands of a skilled blind masseur.

Enjoy dinner at an historic landmark in the centre of Kampot.

Day 5: KAMPOT - PHNOM PENH DEPARTURE

This morning enjoy Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) on a calm stretch of the Kampot River. SUP is an enjoyable way to experience the beautiful river (duration 2.5 hrs including travel to/from start/finish point. Tour is on a private basis).

Following the morning adventure it is time to freshen up, check out and head for lunch at a café that helps a good cause. Established in 2006, the Epic Arts Café grew from a desire to provide work opportunities for deaf and disabled people as well as a hang-out for deaf students. Today, the Cafe stands as a model for an inclusive working environment within the local community, providing employment for ten people and raising funds for the work of Epic Arts. 

Following lunch it is time for the road journey back to Phnom Penh (3hrs), or alternatively journey on to the south coastal town of Sihanoukville or the nearby islands.
